The Single Origin of the Month will focus on promoting a different coffee farm/producer each month. This City Roast profile will highlight the notes and flavors of the beans that each farmer expects in every cup.
This month's offering is from Yemen.
Produced in the high-altitude sub-district of Al Sharqui, this coffee is grown on dramatic stone terraces perched 2200 meters above sea level. The region’s rugged landscape requires farmers to haul harvests up incredibly steep slopes, often relying on donkeys to navigate the narrow paths. This specific lot, managed by Fatoum Muslot, represents a new generation of quality-focused export practices, involving roughly 140 smallholder farmers who hand-sort the cherries to ensure a superior physical condition. The volcanic soil and arid climate of these "hanging gardens" contribute to a profile that is famously intense and "rustic-tinged." Because of the complexity of these heirloom varieties, the beans benefit from at least 72 hours of rest after roasting to allow the dense flavors to fully coalesce.
The sensory experience of Sharqui Haraz begins with a dry fragrance of palm sugar, molasses bread, and a unique hint of leather. When brewed, the cup reveals a savory-sweet core of salted honey cookie and pistachio, accented by deep notes of date syrup and dark spice. Medium City+ roasts highlight pungent black tea and chocolate malt, while darker Full City roasts transform into a bittersweet powerhouse of 82% dark chocolate and tobacco. This versatility makes it an exceptional choice for complex espresso, offering a thick, syrupy body with traces of dried stone fruit. The finish is often marked by sappy-sweet accents of palo santo and frankincense, leaving a lingering, aromatic impression.
